Agartala, 20th June 2025: A midnight police chase involving suspected cattle thieves from the night travelers culminated in a head-on collision that left a female officer seriously injured and heightened tension in the Jatrapur police station area.
According to officials, the incident took place around 1:30 am on June 20, when residents of Ledra Bari village located within an ADC area noticed a suspicious vehicle and raised an alarm. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, Jatrapur police dispatched a special patrol unit led by Sub-Inspector Rumi Akhter.
The pursuit intensified near the Banshpukur commercial area, where the suspects’ vehicle attempted to evade authorities, heading towards Khadikhala village under Kathalia Gram Panchayat. During the chase, the suspects’ car reportedly overturned, then veered back onto the road before colliding violently with the police vehicle. Both vehicles sustained significant damage.
Despite the crash, the suspects continued fleeing until their vehicle was intercepted again near Thali Bari School. In a second collision, this time involving another patrol vehicle, the accused abandoned their car and fled into the adjacent forest. A mobile phone was recovered from the abandoned car, which was towed to the police station.
Sub-Inspector Akhter, who sustained serious injuries in the impact, was taken to Kathalia Hospital for immediate care and is currently recuperating in her quarters.
Speaking to reporters, Jatrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Subrata Debnath confirmed that a manhunt was launched in the forest early the next morning. During the operation, one suspect identified as 27-year-old Jewel Hossain of Kalam Khet under Melaghar Police Station was arrested. The vehicle used in the crime bearing registration number TR02K-0384 has been seized.
“The photograph of the arrested individual will not be released at this stage due to the ongoing investigation,” OC Debnath stated, expressing confidence that the remaining suspects will be arrested soon. Hossain is expected to be produced in court later today for remand.
This marks the first such violent confrontation between police and alleged cattle thieves in the Jatrapur area.
