Potholes and Promises: Baldakhal residents urge government to fix decades-old issue of dilapidated roads

Agartala, 1st April 2024:   In the heart of Baldakhal, nestled within the Khayerpur assembly constituency lies a road that serves as a symbol of neglect and broken promises. For years, the stretch of road from Chandrapur to Chaturdash Devta Mandir has deteriorated, leaving local residents and commuters stranded in a state of despair.

Despite hopes raised during the political transitions, the plight of Baldakhal’s residents remains unchanged. Even during the tenure of the Left, calls for road renovation fell on deaf ears. With the arrival of the BJP government in 2018, optimism swelled among the locals, anticipating a resolution to their long-standing issue. However, two consecutive electoral victories later, the road still languishes in disrepair, rendering it virtually impassable.

Ratan Chakraborty, the MLA of Khayerpur assembly constituency, has been repeatedly urged to address the dire condition of the road. Yet, allegations surface that these pleas have fallen on indifferent ears, exacerbating the suffering of those dependent on this vital artery for their daily commute.

The significance of this road cannot be overstated, as it serves as the lifeline for not only the local residents but also facilitates the daily commute of over a thousand individuals, including students attending the Agartala Public School in the vicinity. The deteriorating state of such a crucial thoroughfare raises pertinent questions about the government’s commitment to development and progress, casting doubt on the efficacy of its much-touted ‘double engine’ approach.

As the Lok Sabha elections loom on the horizon, the residents of Baldakhal and the weary drivers navigating the treacherous road cling to a glimmer of hope. They assert that the rehabilitation of the road before the elections would not only alleviate their hardships but also serve as a tangible testament to the fulfillment of electoral promises.

Amidst the political expression and electoral fervor, the people of Baldakhal remain steadfast in their demand for basic infrastructure and an impression of normalcy. Their voices echo the sentiment of many across the nation, yearning for a government that not only hears but also acts upon the cries of its citizens.
