Agartala, 5th November 2025: The Tripura unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled a series of commemorative programs to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song Vande Mataram, first sung by Rabindranath Tagore. The announcement was made today by BJP state vice president Papia Datta during a press conference.
Datta emphasized the song’s pivotal role in India’s freedom movement, stating, “Vande Mataram became the rallying cry for independence from British rule. It was first chanted at major political gatherings in Kolkata and gained prominence during the 1896 session of the Indian National Congress, where Rabindranath Tagore himself performed it.” She further noted that in 1950, the song was officially accorded the status of the national song of the Republic of India.
The BJP leader also recalled that in 1909, Sri Aurobindo translated Vande Mataram into English, a version that remains widely circulated to this day.
According to Datta, the central government will organize events across the country to honor the song’s 150-year legacy. In Tripura, the state BJP will host a special ceremony on November 7 in front of the Ujjayanta Palace to mark the occasion.
