Pradesh Congress holds protest rally demanding  CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

Date:

Agartala, 8th October 2026 : The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee observed a ‘Black Day’ on Thursday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and protesting what the party described as an attack on democratic rights.

Congress leaders and workers staged a protest march in Agartala wearing black clothes and badges. Pradesh Congress Committee president Ashish Kumar Saha, MLA Sudip Roy Barman and other senior party leaders participated in the programme.

Addressing the protesters, Roy Barman alleged that the Congress was protesting against the police action during the previous day’s demonstration involving Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge and other INDIA bloc leaders.

He alleged that the police response amounted to “inhuman atrocities” and said the Congress would continue its movement to protect democracy. “Gyanesh has to go,” Roy Barman said, calling for the immediate resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The Congress leader also alleged that the democratic right to protest was being obstructed and that police were being used to prevent people from joining demonstrations.

Similar protest programmes were reportedly organised by the Congress in different districts of Tripura. The party said an INDIA bloc delegation would approach the Election Commission with its demands.

Congress leaders also vowed to intensify the movement across the country in the coming days.
