Agartala, 8th October 2026 : The Tripura State Election Commission has started the groundwork for the upcoming Urban Local Body (ULB) elections, with State Election Commissioner P.K. Chakraborty holding a review meeting with senior administrative and police officials on Thursday.
The elections will cover the Agartala Municipal Corporation along with 20 other urban local bodies across the state. Chakraborty said the tenure of the existing urban local bodies is scheduled to end on December 9, making it necessary to complete the election process before the deadline.
The meeting brought together all eight District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police, Additional SPs, the DGP-in-charge, IG (Law and Order) and officials from various departments associated with the conduct of the polls.
Speaking after the meeting, Chakraborty said the main objective was to assess the preparedness of the administration and ensure that the elections are held in a free, fair, peaceful and orderly manner.
Officials discussed security arrangements, the functioning of election machinery and the steps that need to be completed before the formal notification of the election schedule.
The State Election Commissioner said the Urban Development Department has already completed several key preparatory tasks, including the finalisation of polling stations. The draft publication concerning the election process has been issued, while the final publication is expected on October 15.
The meeting also reviewed the legal and constitutional provisions governing ULB elections, existing instructions of the State Election Commission and areas where additional guidelines may be required. Chakraborty said such review meetings are important as election-related responsibilities are handled by different officials during each election cycle. The Commission also discussed timelines and key deadlines to ensure that all necessary arrangements are completed well ahead of the announcement of the poll schedule.
