Agartala, 15th October 2025: Founder of the Tipra Motha Party, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, on Wednesday criticized the BJP government in Tripura for not conducting village committee (VC) elections, claiming that the party fears losing.
Speaking at a public event, Debbarma said that it has been nine years since VC elections were last held in the state because the ruling party “knows it will not win a single seat.”
He further accused the BJP of following a “use and throw” approach, adding that the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) lacks authority over land rights. “The Central government has promised direct funding but it is not being provided. When we approach the state government, they say that funds will only be released if we join the BJP. The same logic applies when Congress or CPI(M) are in power—they expect regional parties to submit to them first before granting funds,” Debbarma said.
Highlighting regional disparities, he added, “In Meghalaya, Garos and Khasis have their own land, and the same is true in Mizoram and Nagaland. But in Tripura, land allocation is controlled by the District Magistrate, who decides who gets what.”
Debbarma also criticized the incomplete implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, signed two years ago for the welfare of tribal communities. “The Accord states that forest lands under TTAADC should be given in the names of tribals, but this has not been done. Instead, power remains with District Magistrates. Across the Northeast, except Tripura, indigenous people control their land rights. I cannot accept this,” he said.
He also raised concerns over education, urging better opportunities for tribal children. “I have demanded English-medium education for our next generation so they can secure good jobs. Yet, only children of BJP leaders get such access. Those who work for BJP benefit; others do not,” Debbarma claimed.
“Some people are only focused on politics, but we also belong to this country. The state is trying to divide our unity so they can take control. I will not compromise on this,” he added.
