Pregnant woman saved after critical emergency surgery at Unakoti District Hospital

Date:

Agartala, 20th  May 2026:  In a remarkable display of medical expertise and emergency response, doctors at Unakoti District Hospital successfully saved the life of a 32-year-old pregnant woman who was brought to the hospital in an extremely critical condition after suffering from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.

According to hospital sources, the woman, a resident of Halaichhara village, was admitted to the emergency department on May 18 at around 12:45 PM with severe abdominal pain. Upon arrival, doctors found her condition to be highly critical. She was suffering from severe internal bleeding, medical shock, and acute anemia, putting her life at immediate risk.

Doctors immediately initiated diagnostic procedures, including ultrasonography and clinical examinations. The medical team soon diagnosed the case as a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, a dangerous condition in which the fetus develops outside the uterus. In this case, the pregnancy had developed in the right fallopian tube, which later ruptured, causing continuous internal bleeding inside the abdomen.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, hospital authorities swiftly prepared the operation theatre and launched an emergency surgical intervention. Under general anesthesia, doctors performed an emergency laparotomy to stop the bleeding and save the patient’s life.

During the surgery, doctors discovered severe rupture and damage to the right fallopian tube as well as the cornual region of the uterus. The surgical team removed nearly one unit of clotted blood and accumulated fluid from the abdomen. To control the bleeding, a right-sided partial salpingectomy was performed along with the application of hemostatic sutures. The patient also received one unit of blood transfusion during and after the operation.

The life-saving surgery was conducted by Obstetrics and Gynecology specialist Dr. Sujit Das and anesthesiologist Dr. Amit Pal Chowdhury. They were assisted by Nursing Officer Smriti Das, OT Technician Subhash Sinha, and GDA Nirmal Singh.

Hospital officials said the patient’s survival was made possible due to the doctors’ prompt diagnosis, swift decision-making, and coordinated teamwork. The patient is currently under intensive observation, and her condition is reported to be stable.

Family members of the patient expressed deep gratitude to the doctors and hospital staff for saving her life.

“We had almost lost hope, but the doctors at this government hospital stood by us and saved her life. We will remain grateful forever,” a family member said.

The successful operation has once again highlighted the growing capability of district-level government hospitals in delivering advanced and complex emergency healthcare services in rural areas
