Agartala, 20th December 2025 : The state committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today organized a mass sit-in demonstration in front of the Labour Department at Office Lane, demanding the repeal of the labour codes introduced by the central government, which they described as anti-worker and destructive.
The programme witnessed the presence of former MP and CITU state General Secretary Shankar Prasad Datta, former Power Minister and CITU state President Manik Dey, along with leaders from CITU’s state and district units and representatives of various workers’ organizations. A large turnout of workers and employees made the event significant.
Addressing the gathering, Shankar Prasad Datta alleged that the four labour codes implemented by the central government undermine workers’ rights, permanent employment, minimum wages, social security, and trade union rights. He claimed that the new laws are designed to benefit corporate interests at the expense of workers, leaving nearly 90 percent of the country’s population outside their ambit, including the unemployed, elderly, and farmers.
Datta further stated that by scrapping 29 existing labour laws, the government has imposed four anti-worker codes, which allow corporates to extend working hours from 8 to 12 hours and weaken provisions related to provident fund, gratuity, and other social security measures.
CITU leaders demanded the immediate withdrawal of the labour codes and restoration of the earlier labour laws to safeguard workers’ interests. They also urged the government to ensure fair wages, job security, and social protection for the working class.
The state committee of CITU announced that the struggle would continue in the coming days, with sustained movements until the rights of working people are secured.
