Protest march at Dharmanagar against Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest

Agartala 20th July 2026:   In protest against the forcible removal of renowned educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a hunger strike in Delhi, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) jointly organized a protest march in Dharmanagar. The demonstration was held to demand the protection of democracy and the right to education, with participants calling for the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The march passed through DNV Road, Kalibari Road, and the town’s market area before concluding with a brief gathering in front of the statue of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. It later ended at the CPI(M) subdivision office.

Speakers at the rally strongly condemned the police action against Sonam Wangchuk and reiterated their demand for the Union Education Minister’s resignation. DYFI subdivision secretary Arjun Nath, president Jasim Uddin, state committee member Rajib Nath, SFI subdivision president Salman Khan, student leader Sujan Nath, and CPI(M) Dharmanagar subdivision secretary Ratan Roy were among those present.

The agitators warned that if anti-education and anti-democratic policies continue, the movement will be intensified in the coming days.
