Agartala, 4th August 2025:  Residents of Garjan Tilla and Gareri Tilla in Dharmanagar rallied today against surging electricity bills attributed to newly installed smart meters. The protest culminated in a mass deputation to the Haflong Electricity Office, where demonstrators demanded an immediate rollback of the meter system.

Led by local youth leader Gautam Prasad Gareri, the delegation met Senior Manager Rasul Nath Tripura and submitted a memorandum urging authorities to discontinue the smart meters. Protesters alleged that monthly bills have tripled since installation rising from Rs 300– Rs 400 to Rs 1,400– Rs 1,500 making payments untenable for many families.

Residents issued a stern warning: unless swift action is taken, they will suspend payments and stop using electricity altogether. A larger agitation was also threatened if demands remain unmet.

To preempt any untoward incidents, Dharmanagar Police imposed strict security measures, including the deployment of TSR personnel and sub-inspectors. The protest proceeded peacefully under tight supervision.

Sources within the Power department stated that the concerns raised will be forwarded to higher authorities for urgent consideration.
