Agartala, 21st April 2026: Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte on Tuesday conducted a field inspection of the ongoing embankment construction along the Muhuri River in Belonia subdivision. He reviewed progress at the site and assessed the pace of work.
Addressing a press conference later at Belonia Circuit House, Gitte informed that nearly 80 to 90 percent of the embankment and adjoining 8-kilometer roadwork has already been completed. He expressed confidence that the remaining work would be finished within the next one to one-and-a-half months. “Instructions have been issued to expedite completion before the monsoon to ensure the safety of the embankment,” he said, adding that the project has been allocated around ₹70 to ₹75 crore.
The Secretary emphasized the crucial role of local residents and the Belonia Municipal Council in supporting the project. During his visit, he also inspected areas in Ishan Chandra Nagar and Ballamukha, and noted that the feasibility of installing a switch gate at Belonia Chhara is under consideration.
Gitte held discussions with officials on various aspects of the project, stressing the importance of meeting deadlines to safeguard the community. He was accompanied by the South District Magistrate, the PWD Executive Engineer, officials of Belonia subdivision, and other engineers.
It may be recalled that last year’s monsoon floods caused damage to several areas near the Muhuri River embankment. Responding to longstanding demands from residents, the PWD initiated permanent repair work, including the construction of the new 8-kilometer stretch of road alongside the embankment.
