Agartala, 19th March 2025:   In a landmark judgment, the Udaipur court sentenced Rahul Das, a resident of Murapara, Udaipur to 20 years in prison for the kidnapping and rape of a minor schoolgirl. The incident occurred on September 21, 2022, when the girl, on her way to Udaipur English Medium School, was forcibly abducted by Das.

Following the girl’s disappearance, her family lodged a complaint at the Udaipur Women’s Police Station (Case No. 44/22). The police promptly initiated an investigation under sections 363 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code and the POCSO Act. Rahul Das was later apprehended along with the victim from a rented house in Dharmanagar.

After extensive hearings, during which statements from 16 witnesses were recorded, Special Judge Shankar Lal Dutta delivered the verdict. Das received a combined sentence of 20 years under the POCSO Act and additional penalties, including fines. While Das’s sister, uncle, and a friend were initially implicated, they were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

The case was led by Sub-Inspector Lipika Bhattacharya of the Women’s Police Station, with Public Prosecutor Paltu Das representing the state.
