Agartala, 29th June 2025 : After a disruption of nearly seven days, rail services in Tripura and Silchar have gradually started returning to normal, following swift restoration efforts by the Northeast Frontier Railway.
Train operations had come to a standstill after massive landslides led to soil accumulation on the crucial Lumding–Badarpur rail line — a key route connecting the Barak Valley and Tripura with the rest of the country. The landslides forced the cancellation of several trains and left hundreds of passengers stranded.
However, in a major relief, the Northeast Frontier Railway undertook restoration work on a war footing and successfully cleared the debris from the affected section. A trial engine was run on the repaired stretch at 8:00 am on Sunday, followed by the movement of a goods train to confirm track safety.
Subsequently, the Sealdah–Silchar Kanchenjunga Express resumed its journey and reached New Haflong station at 10:50 am. Passenger movement was further restored when the Rangia–Agartala Express passed through the route in the afternoon.Officials confirmed that regular train services are expected to resume fully in the coming days, bringing much-needed relief to commuters in the region.
The landslides had underscored the vulnerability of the hill railway network during the monsoon season, and officials have called for enhanced monitoring and preemptive safety measures to avoid such prolonged disruptions in the future.
