Rampada invites Om Birla to Agartala for CPA Conference, seeks funds for MLA Guest House and EMRS buses

Date:

Agartala, 8th August 2026 : Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Rampada Jamatia on Friday stepped up preparations for the upcoming 23rd Annual Conference of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) India Region Zone-III by meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi and inviting him to attend the two-day event in Agartala.

Jamatia met Birla at around 2:45 PM on August 7 and formally extended the invitation for the conference, which is scheduled to be held on November 26 and 27, 2026. The event will be hosted by the Tripura Legislative Assembly and is expected to bring together Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Presiding Officers and senior parliamentary representatives from the eight Northeastern states.

The conference was earlier scheduled for April this year but was postponed due to monsoon-related circumstances. Its proposed discussions are expected to focus on parliamentary practices, governance, regional cooperation and strengthening democratic institutions in the Northeast.

During his meeting with Birla, Jamatia also submitted a memorandum seeking financial assistance for construction of a 50-room VVIP Vidhayak Atithi Shala, or MLAs’ Guest House, in Tripura. The proposed facility, covering approximately 25,000 square feet, is estimated to require Rs 15 crore. Jamatia requested Birla to recommend the proposal to the appropriate authorities, stressing the importance of such infrastructure for accommodating visiting legislators and dignitaries.

Later in the evening, Jamatia met Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and submitted another memorandum seeking Rs 84 lakh to operate buses for students enrolled in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) across Tripura.

The proposed financial support would facilitate transportation for tribal students until hostel facilities are completed at the concerned institutions. Jamatia urged the Ministry to consider the request in view of the educational requirements of students, particularly those from remote tribal areas.
