Agartala, May 27, 2023: The villagers of Chakmaghat area under Teliamura sub-division on Saturday staged a blockade on the Assam-Agartala national highway due to the rampage of elephants in the dark of night.

The road blockers said that wild elephants have been rampaging in vast areas of Teliamura for a long time.

Almost every day, hordes of wild elephants enter the locality and wreak havoc. Several people have also died due to elephant attacks. Finally, on Saturday morning, the patience of the residents of the Bhumihin Colony area of Chakmaghat broke.

It is alleged that a group of wild elephants entered the locality and vandalized several houses on Friday night as well. Although the Forest department was repeatedly informed about the encroachment of wild elephants, the department officials were reluctant to initiate any role.

Becoming impatient on the negligence of Forest department employees and officials, residents joined the road blockade. Teliamura police station staff and officials of Teliamura forest department rushed to the spot after receiving information about the road blockade.

Teliamura Forest Range Officer Supriya Debnath talks to the road blockaders. He assured that the forest department will take necessary steps to solve the problem of elephants. After receiving this assurance, the national highway was set free for passing of vehicles.
