Agartala, 23rd November 2024: Agartala witnessed a significant gathering on Saturday at the TFDPC meeting hall near the Circuit House, where a meeting was held to demand official recognition of the mother tongue of the Reang tribe ‘Kau Bru’ and the declaration of a holiday on Hojagiri Day.
The event was attended by Minister Ratan Lal Nath, alongside representatives from the Reang tribe community, artists, writers, and intellectuals.
Speaking to reporters, Minister Nath highlighted the government’s commitment to linguistic diversity. “The BJP coalition government in the state is proactive and deeply invested in the development of all languages. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting mother tongues, as they are integral to our cultural identity,” he remarked.
Minister Nath also referred to the contributions of former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and current Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha in championing linguistic preservation. “Both our past and present leaders have consistently supported the idea that no language should be lost,” he added.
Discussing the linguistic landscape of Tripura, Nath noted, “Communities like the Debbarma, Tripuri, Reang, Jamatia, Noatia, Kalai, and Murasingh predominantly speak Kokborok. However, they have an unwavering desire to nurture and advance their distinct languages.”
Expressing optimism about the demands, Nath stated, “I am hopeful that the aspirations of the Reang tribes for the recognition of ‘Kau Bru’ and the observance of Hojagiri Day will be fulfilled soon.”
