Agartala, 27th August 2025 : Despite ongoing efforts by the state government to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, South Tripura District Hospital at Santirbazar is grappling with a critical shortage of specialist doctors following recent deputations.
Two key specialists- pediatrician Dr. Prasenjit Das and medicine expert Dr. Abir Bhowmik have been reassigned to Maicherra Primary Health Center and Udaipur respectively. Their departure has left the district hospital with just one pediatrician and one medicine specialist to serve the entire district triggering widespread concern among patients and residents.
Local patients report a sharp decline in service quality, particularly in emergency care and specialized treatment. “Earlier, we had access to timely consultations and proper care. Now, even basic pediatric and medicine services are delayed,” said a resident seeking treatment for his child.
Local members are urging the government to reconsider the deputations and reinstate both doctors at South Tripura District Hospital. They argue that restoring the specialist team is essential to ensure uninterrupted medical services and reduce patient suffering.
