Agartala, 30th May 2026: Frustrated over a prolonged power outage that has left their locality without electricity for nearly one and a half months, residents of Ishan Chandra Para in Ambassa staged a road blockade on Saturday, demanding immediate intervention from the electricity department.
The protest began around 10 a.m. at the Arai Mile area along the Ambassa–Gandacherra Road. More than a hundred residents participated in the demonstration, alleging that repeated complaints to the power department had failed to bring any solution. With Saturday being the weekly market day in Ambassa, the blockade caused severe disruption to traffic, leaving numerous vehicles stranded on both sides of the road and creating hardships for commuters, traders, and shoppers.
Police personnel from Ambassa Police Station rushed to the spot after receiving information about the blockade. However, the protesters refused to withdraw their agitation, insisting that senior officials from the electricity department visit the site and address their grievances.
As the situation escalated, officials from the Ambassa Electricity Department arrived at the location and held discussions with the villagers. During the meeting, the officials assured residents that a new transformer would be installed at the earliest and electricity supply would be restored soon.
Following the assurance, the protesters lifted the blockade at around 12 noon, nearly two hours after it began. Traffic movement gradually returned to normal.
Speaking to reporters, a local resident alleged that the area had been living in darkness for over six weeks. According to him, when villagers approached the electricity department seeking restoration of power, they were informed that they would need to deposit ₹2,500 and open a new consumer ID before electricity could be provided. This prompted residents to convene a village meeting and ultimately organize the road blockade.
The resident further stated that officials have now asked villagers to visit the department office on Monday to complete the ID-related formalities, after which a new transformer would be provided. He warned that if the issue is not resolved promptly, residents would launch a larger and more intense protest in the coming days.
The focus now shifts to how quickly the electricity department can resolve the issue and restore power to the affected locality, bringing relief to residents who have endured weeks without electricity.
