Residents of West Kanchanmala Face Acute Water Shortage Despite Jal Jeevan Mission Facilities

Agartala, 10th March 2026:  The Jal Jeevan Mission, aimed at providing safe drinking water to every household across the country, seems to be faltering in West Kanchanmala. Despite the government installing water pumps and pipelines to supply water to both urban and rural areas, residents of the area are struggling to access drinking water.

A government-installed pump near Kanchanmala S.B. School, in the Dukli and D Block areas, was meant to deliver water efficiently to local households. The responsibility of operating this pump was assigned to Deepak Roy, son of local resident Ranjan Roy. However, residents allege that the pump operator is running the machine according to his own convenience.

According to complaints, Deepak Roy operates the pump for less than an hour at a time before shutting it down, leaving households unable to collect adequate water. For the past 8–10 days, the pump has reportedly been non-functional due to a claimed mechanical fault, causing widespread water scarcity in West Kanchanmala. Despite the issue, the DWSS (Drinking Water and Sanitation) department has yet to repair the pump, leaving locals without a reliable water supply.

Residents further stated that if the pump were operated for at least two hours daily, the water shortage could have been avoided. Multiple complaints to the operator about the problem have reportedly gone unheeded. As a result, the community holds the pump operator responsible for the ongoing water crisis.

Local citizens have appealed to the state government and the DWSS department, demanding urgent repair of the pump and directives to ensure that the pump operates for at least two hours daily so that residents have access to drinking water. The public now waits to see how the authorities will respond to the issue after it has been highlighted in the media.
