Agartala, 2nd December 2024: The proliferation of fast food and adulterated food shops across the three northern districts of Tripura has raised significant concerns among residents. Kumarghat, in particular has seen a rapid increase in such establishments, with the number of fast food shops in the town surpassing 100. Dharmanagar, the northern district headquarters and mixed-populated areas like Kanchanpur are also witnessing a similar trend.
Local residents have alleged that many of these shops are selling stale and rotten food, posing serious health risks. “It’s alarming to see so many shops selling unsafe food. The administration seems to be turning a blind eye to this issue,” said a concerned resident of Kumarghat.
Despite the growing number of complaints, the sub-district and district administrations have been accused of inaction. “The authorities are pretending not to see the problem. Occasionally, they conduct show-off drives when buyers protest, but the bigwigs of expired and adulterated goods are not being held accountable,” another resident remarked.
The responsibility for anti-adulteration campaigns lies with sanitary inspectors, but there has been little to no action from the sub-district or district administration. “The booming trade in adulterated and expired goods continues unchecked. The administration needs to step up and take decisive action to protect public health,” urged a local activist.
The community is calling for stricter enforcement of food safety regulations and accountability for those selling unsafe food. The administration’s response to these demands will be crucial in addressing the growing concern over food safety in the northern districts of Tripura.
