Agartala, 15th August 2026: Tension prevailed in Shakbari area of Kalachhara after local residents blocked National Highway 8 on Saturday to protest the arrest of a local resident in connection with an alleged online money transfer fraud.
According to reports, a youth from Ramraibari lodged a complaint on Friday against Shanti Ranjan Tripura of Shakbari, alleging irregularities related to an online money transfer. Acting on the complaint, police from Manubazar Police Station arrested Shanti Ranjan Tripura from his residence.
Following the arrest, residents of Shakbari gathered outside his house and blocked the Agartala–Sabroom National Highway, alleging that he had been arrested without committing any offence. The protesters demanded a fair investigation and the unconditional release of Shanti Ranjan Tripura.
A large police contingent reached the spot, along with senior police officials, including Sabroom Superintendent of Police Diptanu Biswas. Police held discussions with the protesters and attempted to persuade them to withdraw the blockade. However, the protesters remained firm on their demands for a considerable The blockade led to long queues of vehicles on the national highway, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters. The situation remained tense in the area, with police maintaining close watch. Police have not yet issued a detailed statement regarding the allegations against Shanti Ranjan Tripura or the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
