Agartala, 9th November 2025 : The royal crematorium, located on the banks of the Howrah River in the heart of Agartala, stands as a neglected remnant of Tripura’s royal heritage.

Once a sacred resting place for the state’s kings, the site has now fallen into severe disrepair due to years of apathy from both the royal family and the government.

The crematorium, where members of the Tripura royal family were cremated, remained in good condition until the reign of Kirit Bikram Kishore Manikya, son of the last ruler Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya.

Today, however, the area has become overrun with wild vegetation, while a nearby fish market and drainage waste have made the surroundings filthy and foul-smelling.

Local residents lament that the royal memorials and gravestones are deteriorating rapidly, with inscriptions fading and nameplates buried under weeds.

The once serene and historical site has turned into a neglected jungle, making it impossible for visitors to feel the reverence once associated with it.

Citizens and historians believe that Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the current scion of the royal family, should draw the Agartala Municipal Corporation’s attention to the issue and take steps to preserve the site.

However, many accuse him of showing indifference toward the memory of his ancestors.

If this neglect continues, future generations may forget that this site was once the royal cremation ground of Tripura’s kings, an important symbol of the state’s regal history.
