Sadar Cong holds protest against AMC in city

Agartala: October 07 : The bustling streets of Agartala witnessed a fervent protest on Saturday as the Sadar District Congress Committee rallied against a surge in wealth tax, eviction of street vendors, and an unprecedented hike in electricity tariffs in the run-up to the much-awaited Shardotsav.

Prabir Chakraborty, Convener of Pradesh Congress, lambasted the Agartala Municipal Corporation for what he termed as a dearth of meaningful initiatives and criticized the surging cost of goods that has left citizens disgruntled. In a scathing critique, Chakraborty accused the BJP-led triple engine government of making decisions contrary to public interests, thus exacerbating the hardships faced by the populace.

“While the triple engine government professes one thing, their actions tell a different story. They’ve burdened the citizens with a sudden spike in electricity tariffs, despite assurances that no new taxes would be imposed. This is a draconian decree, and we’re organizing a march to vehemently oppose this Tughlaki decision,” stated Chakraborty.

The protest march, commencing from the Congress building at Post Office Chaumuhani, wound its way through the city, drawing attention to the discontent brewing among the citizens. The procession culminated in a delegation to the Commissioner of AMC, where a list of demands addressing public interests was presented by Congress leadership.

Of particular concern was the forceful eviction of street hawkers. Chakraborty announced, “If these marginalized vendors are not promptly rehabilitated and adequately compensated, we will escalate our movement in the days to come.”
