SatSangam High School: 200 students dependent on a single teacher

Date:

Agartala, 13th May 2026:   The SatSangam High School, located in the remote SatSangam Gram Panchayat under Kadamtala block in North Tripura near the India-Bangladesh border, witnessed intense student protests on Wednesday over an acute shortage of teachers.

Ignoring heavy rainfall, agitated students locked the school gates early in the morning and staged a road blockade, demanding immediate teacher appointments. According to reports, the school’s morning section has over 200 students but only one teacher, Bilal Miah, is currently posted there. Parents expressed outrage, questioning how a single teacher could possibly manage teaching, supervision, and daily responsibilities for such a large number of pupils.

A local guardian lamented, “How can one teacher handle more than 200 students? Will he teach or just keep watch? Despite repeated complaints to the education department, nothing has changed. Our children’s future is at stake.”

Members of the school management committee also voiced grave concern, stating that the prolonged teacher shortage has destroyed the learning environment. They stressed that students in this border region are being deprived of education, while authorities have failed to take effective steps.

The protesting students declared that their agitation would continue until they received written assurances of teacher appointments. The road blockade, which lasted for hours in the rain, created widespread tension in the area.

Finally, around noon, Deputy Inspector of Schools Abhimanyu Malakar and OSD Samir Das from the district education office arrived at the site. After discussions with the students, they assured that necessary measures would be taken within a week. Following this assurance, the blockade was withdrawn around 1:30 p.m.

However, the larger question remains—will mere assurances resolve the long-standing crisis of teacher shortage in SatSangam High School, or will the students’ future once again be buried under unfulfilled promises?
