Agartala, 3rd November 2025: The Supreme Court of India has rejected the Tripura government’s plea seeking an additional two weeks to submit its explanation regarding the long-pending Village Committee (VC) elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTADC) Act, 1994.
Following the decision, TIPRA Motha founder and MDC Pradyot Kishore Debbarma said in a social media post that the court’s rejection of the state’s extension request was a significant step. He added that the upcoming court order would clarify the next steps concerning the crucial VC elections.
The five-year term of the elected Village Committees expired on March 7, 2021, but no elections have been held since. In August, the Supreme Court issued notices to the Election Commission of India, the Tripura State Election Commission, and the state government, directing them to explain the reasons behind the prolonged delay.
On November 1, the state government sought two additional weeks to file its affidavit, but the court dismissed the plea today.
Reacting to the development, Pradyot Debbarma criticized the government’s repeated delays, calling them “unjustified” and “a tactic to buy time.” He added, “The Tiprasa people are being denied justice. We hope the Supreme Court takes a firm stand against the state government.”
The issue comes amid rising tensions between the ruling BJP and its ally TIPRA Motha over unresolved tribal issues and the delay in implementing the “Greater Tiprasa” agreement in Tripura.
