SEC Receives Over 10,000 Nominations for Panchayat Polls

Agartala, 19th July 2024:  As Tripura prepares for its three-tier Panchayat elections, the State Election Commission (SEC) has received a total of 10,164 nomination papers from various political parties, including BJP, CPIM, and Congress.

The current term for the Panchayat officials is set to expire on August 4. The nomination deadline was July 18, with scrutiny taking place on July 19. Candidates have until July 22 to withdraw their nominations. The elections are scheduled for August 8, with the counting of votes on August 12, and the entire election process is expected to conclude by August 17.

Tripura’s Panchayat structure consists of 6,370 seats across 3,517 constituencies in 606 Gram Panchayats, 35 Panchayat Samities with 423 seats, and 116 seats under 8 Zila Parishads. The total number of eligible voters stands at 1,294,153, comprising 658,445 males, 635,597 females, and 11 others. There will be 2,650 polling stations across the state.

Ashit Kumar Das, Secretary of the Tripura State Election Commission, confirmed on Friday that the nomination process has concluded with a breakdown of submissions: 8,997 for Gram Panchayat, 783 for Panchayat Samities, and 384 for Zila Parishad.

Specifically for Gram Panchayat, the BJP submitted 6,337 nominations, CPIM submitted 1,442, and Congress submitted 810, alongside nominations from Tipra Motha (231), CPIML (4), CPI (3), and 167 independent candidates.

In the Panchayat Samiti category, the BJP submitted 433 nominations, while Congress and CPIM submitted 112 and 205, respectively. Tipra Motha contributed 15, with smaller numbers from CPIML (2), CPI (2), and 14 independents.For the Zila Parishad, the BJP submitted 160 nominations, followed by CPIM (115) and Congress (98). Other submissions included Tipra Motha (3), Amra Banglai (2), CPI (1), and 5 independents.

Additionally, reports from returning officers indicated 4,349 single candidates for Gram Panchayat, 190 for Panchayat Samities, and 2 single candidates for Zila Parishad from various parties.
