Agartala, 13th February 2025: Expressing strong concerns over the uncontrolled rise in education fees across various institutions in Tripura, the Left Youth Organizations, SFI and TSU, have urged the state government to take immediate action.
Addressing a press conference today, they demanded the formation of a committee to regulate and monitor the fee structure of medical, paramedical, private schools, and colleges.
SFI State Secretary Sandipan Deb highlighted that private medical colleges, including Santiniketan and Tripura Medical Colleges, were charging exorbitant fees from students admitted under the state government’s quota, violating the guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC). He reminded that the Supreme Court had previously directed all state governments to establish a committee to regulate and standardize the fee collection in line with NMC guidelines.
“A committee was formed in Tripura a few months ago to address this issue. However, we urge the state government to submit the report of that committee without further delay,” said Deb. He further alleged that there were loopholes in the enforcement of NMC guidelines, particularly concerning Santiniketan and Tripura Medical Colleges.
Additionally, Deb pointed out the rising fee structures in private schools and colleges across Tripura. He warned that if the fees continued to increase at this rate, it would become impossible for a majority of students to afford education. “During the tenure of this government, people are already struggling with food shortages. In such circumstances, further hikes in educational fees will severely impact students’ academic futures,” he added.
To prevent such financial burdens on students and their families, the organizations demanded the immediate formation of a control committee to regulate educational fees in the state. They called for urgent government intervention to ensure that quality education remains accessible and affordable for all.
