Agartala, 22nd September 2024: In a bid to boost self-reliance among women, a grand loan disbursement ceremony was held at Gitanjali Town Hall under the initiative of the Ranirbazar Municipal Council. The event is a part of the Tripura Urban Ajibika Mission where loans were distributed to 73 self-help groups (SHGs).
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the mega loan program emphasized the pivotal role of SHGs in building a self-reliant India. “The purpose of forming a self-help group is to become self-reliant, and everyone should strive for self-reliance. Members of self-help groups are playing a key role in building a self-reliant India,” he stated.
Highlighting the impact of SHGs in Tripura, Chowdhury noted, “There are currently around 5 lakh members of 50,000 self-help groups in Tripura. All these women members are now self-reliant. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has significantly contributed to this self-reliance of women. He realized that a self-reliant society cannot be built unless women are financially self-reliant.”
Chowdhury urged women to break free from traditional family roles and contribute to the nation’s development. “Women should not be bound by restricted family responsibilities. I urge all women to come forward to build a self-reliant India as well as a self-reliant Tripura,” he added.
The ceremony saw the disbursement of loans under various schemes, including the Self Employment Programme and the Pradhan Mantri Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi Scheme, with a total expenditure of rs 3.27 crore.
The event was graced by Ranirbazar Municipal Council Chairperson Aparna Shukla Das, Vice-Chairperson Prabir Kumar Das, social worker Gouranga Bhowmik, Debinagar Gramin Bank Manager Rahul Debnath, Ranirbazar State Bank Manager Bikash Roy, and Ranirbazar Municipal Council Assistant Executive Officer Shyamal Debbarma. Pritam Debnath, Chairman of Jirania Panchayat Samiti, presided over the event, while Jirania Additional Sub-Divisional Magistrate Animesh Dhar delivered the welcome address.
The ceremony concluded with Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury and other guests handing over the loan sanction letters to the SHGs and other borrowers, marking a significant step towards empowering women and fostering economic growth in the region.
