SIT Constituted to Conduct Comprehensive Probe into Former Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar’s Death

Agartala, 28th July 2026 :   In a significant development in the investigation into the death of former Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, the Superintendent of Police (West Tripura), Namit Pathak, has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough, coordinated and time-bound probe into the case.

Dhankar was found dead inside the washroom of his official chamber at the State Police Headquarters (PHQ) in Agartala on July 20. The case was registered at West Agartala Police Station as U.D. Case No. 2026WAG045under section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

According to an official order issued by SP Namit Pathak, the SIT will be headed by the SP himself and includes Additional SP (Urban) Dhruba Nath, Additional SP Souvik De, Deputy Superintendent of Police Benjamin Dewan, Inspectors Rana Chatterjee, Bhaskar Saha and Shiuli Das, Sub-Inspectors Subhojit Deb (the current Investigating Officer), Subendu Das and Chinmoy Bhowmik.

The order directs the SIT to function in close coordination and conduct the investigation strictly in accordance with the law. To ensure continuous monitoring, daily review meetings will be held at 11:30 am in the chamber of the Superintendent of Police to assess progress, discuss fresh developments, allocate responsibilities and chalk out further investigative strategies. An additional debriefing session at 7:30 pm every evening will evaluate the day’s findings, identify gaps and determine the next course of action.

All SIT members have been instructed to attend both meetings unless specifically exempted and submit daily progress reports detailing evidence collected, technical analyses carried out and proposed follow-up actions. A weekly consolidated report will also be forwarded every Saturday to the Inspector General of Police (Law & Order).

The order underscores that the investigation must be carried out professionally, impartially and with complete confidentiality, warning that any deviation from the prescribed instructions will be viewed seriously. The directive has come into effect immediately, reflecting the administration’s intent to ensure a meticulous and transparent investigation into the former police chief’s death.
