Agartala, 16th October 2025: Residents of Sonamura are increasingly alarmed by a surge in thefts linked to drug addiction, with sacred spaces and government facilities becoming frequent targets. From Ramthakur Seba Mandir to the historic Durgabari temple and even the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s (SDM) office canteen, the town’s core institutions are under siege.
The latest incident took place late last night at Sonamura’s revered Durgabari temple, adjacent to the District and Sessions Court and near the SDM office. Unidentified miscreants broke into the temple’s donation box, stealing the entire collection. Temple authorities revealed that the box is traditionally opened after Diwali, yielding a substantial amount used for temple development. The theft was discovered early this morning when committee members arrived for routine duties.
This brazen act has sent shockwaves through the community, especially given its proximity to key administrative buildings. Locals recall a similar incident weeks ago when thieves looted the SDM office canteen, making off with gas cylinders and other valuable items.
Residents blame the escalating drug menace for the spike in such crimes, accusing the local police of failing to contain the situation. “These thefts are not random—they’re driven by addiction,” said one concerned citizen. “The administration is losing grip.”
Following the temple theft, the Durgabari committee lodged a formal complaint with Sonamura police, who visited the site for inspection. However, public frustration continues to mount, with calls growing louder for enhanced security measures and a crackdown on narcotics-related offenses.
As Sonamura grapples with sleepless nights and shaken faith, the demand for accountability and protection has never been more urgent.
