Agartala, 28th May 2024:   The Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury along with CPIM Sabroom Divisional Secretary Arun Tripura and others paid respects to the family of late Purnendu Bikash Datta. Datta, a young resident of Anandpara, was tragically killed by an exposed electric wire while returning home from Sabroom market on the night of May 23 last.

Today at 1 PM, Chaudhury and his colleagues met with Datta’s grieving family, offering their condolences and support. The tragic death has cast a shadow of mourning across the community, highlighting concerns about the safety and maintenance of public utilities.

Speaking to the media after his visit, Chaudhury attributed Datta’s death to the negligence of the private power company responsible for electricity in Sabroom. “Purnendu lost his life due to the sheer negligence of the private power company operating here,” Chowdhury stated. “Accidents do happen, but this was a preventable tragedy, a man-made disaster.”

Chaudhury did not shy away from criticizing the state government, pointing out that the private power company has faced numerous complaints, yet little has been done to address these issues. “The anti-people policies of the current state government have directly contributed to this unfortunate incident. Despite thousands of complaints against this private power company, the government remains indifferent,” he asserted.

In a strong call to action, Chaudhury announced that the Left will lead a major movement against private power companies like FEDCO to ensure the safety and well-being of the public. “This is not just about FEDCO. It is about holding all private power companies accountable. We will organize a significant movement in the coming days to safeguard our people,” he declared.

The visit and Chaudhury’s subsequent statements have intensified the ongoing debate over the privatization of essential services and the government’s role in regulating these entities to prevent such tragedies.
