Agartala, 7th May 2026: In a move aimed at strengthening rural livelihoods through animal husbandry, the Animal Resources Development Department (ARDD) of Tripura on Thursday organized a one-day piglet distribution programme at Jagannathpur Gram Panchayat under Chandipur RD Block. The initiative was conducted under the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Pig – NEH & SCSP Component.
The programme was attended by ARDD, Fisheries and SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, who distributed piglets among beneficiaries from the Fatikroy Assembly Constituency. Altogether, 30 beneficiaries received piglets under the scheme.
Addressing the gathering, the minister said the government is giving priority to livestock-based initiatives to improve the economic condition of rural households and generate self-employment opportunities. He stated that such programmes would help families increase their income while contributing to the vision of a self-reliant rural economy.
Officials from the Deputy Director’s Office in Unakoti district informed that the beneficiaries would also receive technical guidance, training, and regular monitoring to ensure successful pig rearing and sustainable income generation. They added that the project forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to diversify livelihood opportunities beyond conventional farming practices.
Local residents appreciated the initiative, observing that pig farming has strong commercial prospects in Tripura and the Northeast due to the increasing demand for pork. Experts believe that schemes promoting scientific piggery can play a significant role in boosting the rural economy and improving the socio-economic condition of villagers.
