Agartala, 28th August 2026: The Education Department has stepped up monitoring of schools across Sepahijala district through an extensive surprise inspection drive, with 15 headmasters receiving show-cause notices for deficiencies detected during the inspections.
The initiative, which commenced on August 25, is being conducted across all seven blocks of the district through 14 inspection teams. Sepahijala District Education Officer (DEO) Kanika Debbarma is directly supervising the exercise and is leading one of the teams herself.
The teams comprise senior education officials, including Deputy Director Md. Selim, OSDs Antony Debbarma and Rakesh Debbarma, seven State Inspectors of Schools and three Inspectors of Schools from the TTAADC.
The inspections are aimed at obtaining a ground-level assessment of school activities. Officials are checking students’ reading and writing abilities, particularly those from Nursery to Class II, along with their academic progress and attendance. Teacher attendance, school cleanliness, general functioning of institutions and the implementation and quality of the mid-day meal programme are also being examined.
DEO Kanika Debbarma confirmed that irregularities or shortcomings were detected in relation to 15 headmasters, following which show-cause notices were issued. She stressed that the exercise is not merely an inspection drive but an effort to identify problems affecting students and ensure timely corrective measures.
The teams conducted surprise inspections at several schools in Jampuijala Block on Friday. The DEO cautioned that headmasters and assistant headmasters who obstruct or fail to cooperate with inspection teams could face action.
With inspections being carried out without prior notice, the initiative has reportedly put school authorities and teachers on alert. However, the DEO maintained that the visits are being undertaken solely in the interest of students and to strengthen the quality of education.
She added that the surprise inspections will continue in the coming days. Local education observers have welcomed the initiative, saying that the district’s education sector has witnessed noticeable improvement since Kanika Debbarma took charge as DEO.
