Sweet Shop Worker Severely Injured in Hot Oil Accident

Date:

Agartala, 3rd May 2026:  A serious workplace accident at a sweet shop near the Subroom Hospital area has led to allegations of negligence and abandonment of an injured worker, sparking concern and calls for investigation.

According to reports, a confectionery worker suffered severe injuries after accidentally falling into a vessel of hot oil while working at “Samir Tea Stall,” located near Subroom Hospital. The worker claims that the shop owner, identified as Pradip De, initially promised to take him to Agartala for advanced medical treatment but instead allegedly left him at the Agartala Railway Station.

The injured worker stated that after the accident, he was not provided proper medical care. He further alleged that he remained at the railway station in a severely injured condition for nearly 15 to 16 days before being rescued by local residents. He was later taken by ambulance to the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala (commonly known as GB Hospital), where he is currently undergoing treatment for serious injuries, including trauma to his waist.

The worker, originally from Bhagalpur in Bihar, said he had been working at the shop for around two months. The incident reportedly took place during a fair held in Subroom on April 15, during the Bengali New Year celebrations.

However, the shop owner Pradip De has denied the allegations, calling them “completely baseless.” He claimed that immediately after the incident, he urged the worker to go to the hospital, but the worker allegedly refused. The owner also made a conflicting statement to media personnel, claiming that the injured worker was at home, raising further questions about the situation.

The incident has triggered outrage, with concerns being raised over alleged mistreatment of a labourer and lack of responsibility from the employer. Local voices and observers have urged the state labour department and administration to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice for the injured worker.

Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
