Agartala, 3rd January 2025:   A 16-year-old boy was severely injured due to the alleged misconduct of two Special Police Officers (SPOs) in Kanchanmala under Amtali Police Station. The incident took place at the Kanchanmala Lakshmicherra Ramakrishna Higher Secondary School, where an SPO camp has been stationed for a long time. Currently, the camp has one police in-charge and two SPO jawans. In the absence of the in-charge, the two SPO jawans are often found intoxicated.

Today, Uday Vaishnav, a 16-year-old boy and son of Uttam Vaishnav was playing on the school grounds when the two SPO jawans suddenly dragged him inside the camp. They falsely accused him of being a drug addict and brutally beat him with sticks, causing severe injuries. Upon hearing the news, Uday’s family rushed to the camp and rescued him. He was first shifted to Kanchanmala Primary Health Center and later referred to Tripura Medical College & Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital at Hapania for further treatment.

In the evening, local residents surrounded the SPO camp, demanding answers for the incident. The SPO jawans were seen apologizing to Uday’s family with folded hands. The matter has been reported to Amtali Police Station, the Superintendent of Police of the West District and the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights.

The entire Kanchanmala area is now in a state of high tension. The local people along with Uday’s family are demanding strict punishment for the SPO jawans involved. They argue that law enforcers who act above the law and brutally injure a minor are a disgrace to the state’s police administration.
