Tension grips Chandipur as Tipra Motha supporters move to seize village offices

Date:

Agartala, 20th April 2026:  Following the sweeping victory of the Tipra Motha Party in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), tensions have escalated around several village offices. In Unakoti district’s Chandipur block, supporters of the party gathered at the Mailong ADC Village office on Monday, sparking unrest over control of the premises.

According to party supporters, no elections have been held since the 2016 Village Council polls. They allege that although CPI(M) won at the time, the BJP’s rise to power in 2018 led to forcible occupation of village councils, with ruling party representatives managing affairs without fresh elections. Tipra Motha supporters now insist that, as the new authority in the hills, control of the village council offices should be handed over to them.

Today, the supporters submitted a written list forming a temporary committee comprising a chairman, vice-chairman, and 12 members to DCM Hemanta Dhar and the Panchayat Secretary.

Reports suggest similar unrest in Golakpur ADC Village, where police had already been on alert. When attempts were made to seize control again on Monday, heavy police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) forces were deployed in both locations, leaving the atmosphere tense.

DCM Hemanta Dhar confirmed that local residents submitted an application, which will be forwarded to the block office as per procedure. Meanwhile, BJP supporters maintain that the matter is under administrative scrutiny, emphasizing that their government remains in power.

Public reactions have been mixed. Some residents remarked that the current unrest is the “aftermath” of past allegations of forcible occupation. A minister’s earlier comment—“one must face the consequences of their actions”—has resurfaced in discussions surrounding the incident.
