Agartala, 16th April 2026 : A tense situation unfolded in the Ambassa subdivision of Dhalai district in Tripura after an angry mob vandalised a local office of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) following the electrocution of a 13-year-old girl.
According to officials, the incident began on Wednesday afternoon when a high-voltage electric wire snapped and fell onto a house in the Ambassa market area. The victim, identified as Monti Modak, reportedly came into contact with the live wire while playing on the rooftop and suffered an electric shock. She was immediately taken to Kulai Hospital for treatment.
The incident sparked outrage among local residents. By evening, a large crowd had gathered at Ambassa Market and attempted to block a nearby national highway in protest. Personnel from Tripura Police rushed to the spot to control the situation.
Despite police intervention, the situation escalated as protesters marched towards the TSECL office in Ambassa. The crowd allegedly broke open the gate, entered the premises, and vandalised vehicles, office infrastructure, and staff quarters.
During the unrest, Officer-in-Charge Nandan Das of Ambassa Police Station was reportedly assaulted by unidentified individuals, leaving him injured. He was later shifted to Kulai District Hospital for medical care.
In response to the incident, the Ambassa Sub-Divisional Magistrate issued a show-cause notice to the Deputy General Manager and Senior Manager of TSECL. The notice cited failure to comply with prior directives issued under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which required officials to remain stationed and ensure preparedness for emergency situations.
The administration noted that a similar electric wire incident had occurred earlier this month in the same area, raising concerns over negligence and lack of preventive action. The officials have been asked to respond within three days, failing which legal action may be initiated under relevant provisions of the law.
Police have registered a case in connection with the vandalism and assault, and an investigation is currently in progress.
