Agartala, 30th October 2025: Tension flared in Madanmohan Palli area under West Sabroom Gram Panchayat today when an eviction drive led by the sub-divisional administration faced strong resistance from local residents
The police and administrative officials, who had arrived at the site with a bulldozer to demolish several houses, were forced to retreat after locals blocked the road and obstructed the operation.
According to reports, the administration had gone to demolish the homes of ten families, following a court order related to a land dispute. During the drive, electricity connections to around ten houses were also reportedly disconnected.
Local resident Shilpi Tanti, one of the affected individuals, said that the dispute dates back to 2016, when a case was filed in the Belonia Court by a man claiming ownership of the land on which these families have been living. The court later ruled in favor of the complainant, declaring him the lawful owner of the property.
Following the court’s order, the landowner, accompanied by police and administrative staff, arrived to reclaim possession. However, the families facing eviction resisted, stating that they had nowhere else to go and no alternative shelter.
“We are not against the court’s order, but we have no other place to live. That’s why we had to resist,” said Tanti.
As the situation grew tense, locals blocked the bulldozer’s path, preventing demolition work from proceeding. Facing mounting resistance, the police and administrative team eventually withdrew from the spot without carrying out the eviction.
The incident has sparked concerns about rehabilitation and resettlement for the affected families, with locals urging the administration to take a humane approach before proceeding with any further eviction efforts.
