Agartala, 1st July 2025: An incident near Dharmanagar Railway Station late last night sparked political tensions and public unrest following an alleged attack on BJP Mandal secretary Amit Chakraborty.
It is reported that, Chakraborty was assaulted with a sharp weapon by Prashanta Dey, the manager of Hotel North Continental located adjacent to the railway station. As word of the incident spread, a large group of Chakraborty’s supporters quickly assembled outside the hotel chanting slogans demanding Dey’s immediate arrest.
In response, personnel from Dharmanagar Police Station, the CRPF personnel, Sub-Divisional Police Officer and Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Debbarma arrived at the scene. Authorities managed to bring the situation under control and detained Dey, who was subsequently taken into custody.
Despite the swift police action, questions regarding the impartiality of the investigation surfaced. “The police are acting like CPIM loyalists, there is clear bias in the administration,” alleged one of Chakraborty’s supporters.
North District Superintendent of Police Avinash Rai visited Dharmanagar Police Station later that night. However, neither SDPO nor Additional SP Debbarma issued any public statements at the scene. While the motive behind the alleged assault remains unclear, Chakraborty has filed a formal complaint.
The incident has reignited concerns among residents about the deteriorating law and order situation in Dharmanagar, particularly around the Railway Station Road and adjoining areas. Several citizens voiced dismay over the administration’s perceived failure to maintain peace and neutrality.
