Agartala, 18th May 2025:  Just days after a theft in Uttar Bharat Chandra Nagar Bazar, another daring burglary rattled the business community in Maichhara Bazar late Saturday night. In a coordinated raid, a gang of thieves targeted multiple shops, leaving residents alarmed and questioning the police’s ability to curb rising crimes.

Shopkeepers discovered the theft upon opening their stores Sunday morning. The perpetrators gained access by cutting through tin fences, breaking locks, and even slicing through shop canopies. Over eight establishments, including fruit stalls, medicine shops, vegetable vendors, and tiffin centers, were looted. Among the stolen items were four gas cylinders, cash, and valuables.

Upon receiving the news, Inspector Swapan Sen of Bilonia Police Station and Sub-Inspector Rahul Jamatia, accompanied by police personnel and TSR force members, rushed to the scene. “We have initiated an investigation and deployed forensic experts to collect evidence,” said Sen. Blood samples were retrieved from a cut tin fence, leading authorities to suspect that one of the thieves sustained an injury during the break-in.

The incident has intensified concerns among locals, especially since a previous theft at the Sai Baba temple in Maichhara remains unsolved. Thieves had reportedly broken into the temple, stealing worship items and a donation box. “How can we feel safe when thefts keep happening and criminals walk free?” questioned a local trader.

Chandan Das, secretary of the Maichhara Bazaar Traders Committee, expressed frustration at the lack of police intervention. “We demand swift arrests and strict punishment for those responsible. The police must increase patrols in the area, especially during the night,” he stated.

Several business owners believe the rise in drug addiction within the region may be fueling criminal activity. “Many of these thefts seem connected to addicts who target shops for quick cash,” remarked one shopkeeper.
