THRC seeks report from DGP on assault of scribe by Jan 21

Agartala, 30th December 2024:    Tripura Human Right Commission (THRC) has sought an investigation report from the Director General of Police (DGP) by January 21 of 2025 on the allegedly assaulting and threatening of dire consequences to a journalist by an Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI).

As per the THRC report a complaint from one Jashim Uddin a resident of Khupilong village Gomati District, who claimed to be the Secretary of Udaipur Press Club of Gomati District.

“Complaint was received on December 24 in the evening and that complaint is placed before the Commission today. In this complaint, complainant lodged allegation against one Taiyum Hossain, Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, Melaghar Police Station wherein, he had alleged inter alia that on December 22 he was going to Neermahal by riding his car along with other Journalists to collect news in respect of Governor’s visit at Neermahal and when they reached at Melaghar market, the said Taiyum Hossain, Assistant Sub- Inspector of Police at about 2.25 PM asked him to stop his vehicle and accordingly he stopped. The said ASI told him that he could not move towards Neermahal at that point of time as Governor was visiting Neermahal”, the copy of THRC said.

It further said that even after informing the ASI that the complainant is a Journalist the said ASI became furious and forced his vehicle with his hand and used slang languages against them.

“It is alleged that the said ASI uttered un parliamentary words against Journalist Society. Complainant felt that he was wrongfully restrained and he could not proceed towards Neermahal to discharge his professional duty. He alleges that intentionally the said ASI restrained him and obstructed him to discharge his professional duty. Facing resistance from the said ASI, he returned from the spot and went to Melaghar Police Station to report the Officer-In Charge Melaghar but the O.C was not available as such he was waiting for him”, said the report.

The said ASI again reached the Police Station and started to abuse him in slang languages and also threatened him that he would killed him and also said ASI also advanced to assault him but other police officers resisted the ASI.

“’The Commission meticulously perused the complaint. Since there is an allegation of violation of human rights of the complainant as a Journalist, taking cognizance of the matter, The Commission thinks it appropriate to direct DGP, Tripura to inquire into the matter and to submit a report within three weeks. So List the matter after three weeks on January 21 of 2025”, it added.
