Agartala, 2nd October 2026 : Three youths were arrested in Teliamura after allegedly forcing a vehicle driver to pay Rs 4,000 as a Puja subscription and later assaulting police personnel who intervened in the matter.
According to police, Sanjib Chakma of Manikpur lodged a complaint at Teliamura Police Station on October 1, alleging that some youths had stopped his vehicle near the National Highway in front of Barmura Cafeteria at Shantinagar and forcibly collected Rs 4,000 from him.
Following the complaint, a police team led by Woman Sub-Inspector Sumitra Debbarma, accompanied by female police personnel, TSR and CAPF personnel, went to the area. Police said the complainant identified the alleged extortionists while the team was returning towards Teliamura Police Station around 1:30 am.
When officers attempted to detain them, the youths allegedly became aggressive. Police claimed that one of them rammed a motorcycle bearing registration number TR06A-6476 into the leg of female constable Sampa Dasgupta, causing her to fall and sustain injuries. She was subsequently treated at Teliamura Sub-Divisional Hospital.
The three arrested persons were identified as Dhruba Saha, Sudip (Sandip) Chakraborty and Uttam Deb, all residents of Shantinagar. Police said others involved in the incident fled.
A police officer said a case had been registered and the three accused were produced before court, which remanded them to 14 days of judicial custody.
The officer also warned that no organisation was being specifically targeted, but unruly activities during the Puja season would not be tolerated. “If anyone engages in such activities, we will take lawful action against them and pursue all legal steps,” the officer said.
