Agartala, 24th October 2025: In a remarkable feat of pediatric surgery, Dr. Aniruddha Basak successfully performed a complex operation on a three-day-old infant suffering from a rare congenital condition. The baby girl, born on October 15 via cesarean section at a private hospital in Tripura’s Kalamkhet Uramai Sonamura area, is now fully stable and recovering well.
Soon after birth, the newborn, daughter of Mamata Das and Sahadev Das experienced severe respiratory distress while breastfeeding. Concerned by her deteriorating condition, doctors referred her to GB Hospital, where she was admitted the same afternoon. Despite two days of treatment, her symptoms persisted, prompting a transfer to TMC Hospital under the care of pediatric surgeon Dr. Basak.
Following a series of diagnostic tests, the infant was diagnosed with a rare and critical condition known as Bochdalek Hernia. In this congenital disorder, abdominal organs migrate into the chest cavity, compressing the lungs and causing acute breathing difficulties. In this case, the baby’s intestines had shifted into the left side of her chest, rendering the left lung non-functional.
Recognizing the urgency, Dr. Basak performed a two-hour emergency surgery on October 18. He successfully repositioned the displaced organs back into the abdominal cavity, restoring normal lung function. The procedure was completed without complications, and the infant is now safe and healthy.
The parents expressed profound relief and gratitude for the timely intervention. Dr. Basak’s swift action and surgical expertise not only saved the child’s life but also brought hope to the family during a critical moment.
