Tipra Motha MLA Urges Human Rights Panel to Probe Alleged Assault on Woman Leader During TTAADC Polls

Date:

Agartala, 20th April 2026:  A legislator from the Tipra Motha Party, Ranjit Debbarma, has approached the Tripura Human Rights Commission seeking urgent intervention over an alleged incident of assault on a woman party leader during the recent Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections.

In his letter submitted on Monday, Debbarma called for strict and exemplary action against security personnel and their supervising अधिकारियों, accusing them of using excessive force that resulted in both physical and mental harm to an indigenous woman leader affiliated with the party.

The MLA stated that on April 14, he, along with senior women leaders of the party, visited the residence of Supriya Choudhury, a district-level leader of the Tripura Women Federation (TWF), to understand the events surrounding the incident. The alleged incident took place on April 12 at the SDM office premises in Sabroom, under South Tripura district, during the conduct of the TTAADC elections.

According to the complaint, Choudhury and other women representatives were present to observe and ensure a peaceful and fair election process. After voting concluded, they reportedly noticed irregularities during the transfer of EVMs to the designated strong room. When they raised objections and attempted to maintain order, tensions escalated.

Despite the presence of some women police personnel, the letter alleges that male security forces resorted to force, including a coordinated lathi charge. The MLA claimed that the force used was excessive and not justified under election protocols.

He further alleged that Choudhury was physically assaulted, including being kicked from behind by male personnel, resulting in injuries. The incident, he wrote, not only caused physical harm but also affected her dignity in a public setting.

Debbarma has held both the personnel directly involved and their supervising officers accountable, urging the human rights body to conduct a thorough investigation and take decisive action against those responsible.

The matter has raised concerns about the conduct of security forces during election duties and the safety of women participants in the democratic process.
