Agartala, 6th September 2025: Tipra Motha has reiterated its firm opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), with party MLA Ranjit Debbarma declaring today that the regional outfit “will never support” the legislation. Addressing a press conference, Debbarma also expressed gratitude to former party supremo and MDC Pradyot Kishore Debbarman for his legal intervention in the prolonged delay of village council elections in Tripura.
Debbarma criticized the State Election Commission for its failure to announce the date of the village council polls, stating that the delay has led to administrative neglect and the erosion of tribal rights. “The term of the village committees expired in 2021, yet elections remain pending,” he said, adding that the last polls were held on February 24, 2016, with results declared three days later.
He noted that while the COVID-19 pandemic was initially cited as a reason for postponement, the government has taken no steps to resume the electoral process even after conditions normalized. “This inaction has deprived tribal communities of their constitutional rights,” he said.
Following a petition filed in the Tripura High Court demanding timely elections, the court had directed the completion of the process within six months. However, with no progress made, the matter escalated to the Supreme Court, where Pradyot Kishore Debbarman filed a writ petition seeking accountability.
The apex court has since issued a notice to the Tripura government, asking for an explanation regarding the delay. Tipra Motha leaders have publicly thanked Debbarman for his efforts, expressing hope that the election date will be announced soon.
While Tipra Motha has confirmed its readiness to contest the village council elections, Dervabama clarified that no decision has been taken regarding a potential alliance with the BJP. “If the alliance does not serve the people, there is no point in joining it,” he remarked.
