Agartala, 6th September 2025:   The Tripura Jan Adhikar Sangram Parishad (TJASP) has announced a mass movement opposing the implementation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the organization alleges is a covert attempt by the central government to disenfranchise millions of legitimate citizens.

At a press conference held Saturday at the organization’s central office in Shibnagar, TJASP leaders sharply criticized both the central and state governments, accusing them of using SIR as a tool to replicate the controversial NRC and CAA processes under a new guise. TJASP President Subrata Bhowmik claimed that SIR is designed to target working-class and marginalized communities by either removing their names from voter lists or branding them as “doubtful voters.”

“After NRC and CAA, the RSS-BJP combine has introduced SIR as a new narrative to strip citizenship rights from the country’s indigenous, minority, and backward populations,” Bhowmik said. He further alleged that Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma is complicit in the process, stating that the tribal community in Tripura stands to suffer the most if SIR is implemented.

Bhowmik cited Bihar as a cautionary example, where SIR was reportedly applied ahead of the state assembly elections. According to unofficial estimates, over 6.5 million names were removed from the voter rolls, disproportionately affecting Dalits and minority Muslims. One survey suggests that up to 71% of Dalit voters in Bihar may have lost their voting rights.

The Election Commission has indicated that SIR may soon be introduced in West Bengal and Tripura. TJASP fears that in Tripura, tribal, tea garden workers, OBCs, and minority communities will be most vulnerable to disenfranchisement.

TJASP General Secretary K. Dhirendra Singh echoed these concerns, accusing the RSS-BJP-led government of orchestrating a fascist agenda aimed at turning millions of poor and marginalized citizens into stateless laborers for corporate interests. He argued that many citizens lack birth certificates or ancestral documents, making them easy targets under SIR.

“This is not just about voter rolls. It’s about erasing the identity and rights of the country’s most vulnerable people. The goal is to create a cheap labor market for corporate giants while distracting the public from the government’s failures in employment, education, healthcare, and housing,” Singh said.

TJASP has called on all democratic forces in Tripura to unite against SIR and build a broad-based resistance. The organization noted that anti-SIR protests have already begun in Bihar, West Bengal, and other parts of the country, with thousands joining the movement.
