Torrential rain causes severe flooding in Agartala

BY TC News Desk

Agartala: June 18.  The smart city of Agartala faced significant challenges as torrential rains today resulted in widespread flooding across the city, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the improved drainage systems.

Despite efforts to enhance the city’s infrastructure, including the installation of water pump machines in strategic locations, water logging persisted, causing inconvenience and damage to both residents and businesses.

Areas adjacent to Shakuntala Road and Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan experienced extensive waterlogging, with dirty water even entering shops, leaving shop owners distraught.

The gravity of the situation prompted the closure of main roads, leading to severe traffic congestion throughout the city. Small and medium-sized vehicles bore the brunt of the submergence, suffering damage beyond repair.

While the AMC workers sprang into action to address the crisis, some residents criticized the smart city’s management for the inadequate response to the recurring floods.

The local people expressed disappointment at the repeated flooding, despite claims of improved drainage and water management systems.

Administrative staff acknowledged that the water level rose less compared to previous incidents, crediting the drainage system’s improvements. However, the increased water levels still caused significant hardships for residents. It was noted that the water dissipated relatively quickly, yet pedestrians remained greatly affected by the aftermath of the heavy rain. The long-standing issue of Agartala city facing recurrent submersion drew attention, particularly regarding the city’s drainage coverage.
