Agartala, 31st March 2026:  In a remarkable achievement for the state, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have successfully conducted the sixth and seventh kidney transplants in consecutive days, marking a significant milestone in Tripura’s healthcare history.

Under the proactive initiative of the Chief Minister, two kidney transplants were completed on March 30 and 31, 2026, under the supervision of kidney transplant specialist doctors from AGMC, GBP Hospital, and Sija Hospital in Manipur. While earlier transplants were performed one at a time, this is the first instance of two consecutive kidney transplants being completed in two days in the state.

The sixth kidney transplant, performed on March 30, involved a 36-year-old resident of Kalsi, Bykhora, South Tripura, who received a kidney from his childhood friend, a 33-year-old donor from Bykhora Kolsi. The procedure lasted six hours, beginning at 9 am and concluding at 3 pm.

The seventh transplant, conducted on March 31, involved a 33-year-old resident of Champaknagar who received a kidney from his 59-year-old father. This transplant began at 8:30 am and was completed by 1:30 pm, lasting approximately five hours. Both donors and recipients are reported to be healthy and are under close 24-hour medical observation.

The medical team from the Nephrology Department of AGMC and GBP Hospital included Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das, and Dr. Udayan Saha, while the Urology Department was represented by Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh, and Dr. Jiban Debnath. Anaesthetists Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Tapan Debbarma, and Dr. Jagriti Aich provided anesthesia care. Specialists from Sija Hospital and Research Institute in Manipur, including Dr. Soumyarendra Pawnam, Dr. Maharavam Mahale, Dr. Thaw Dam Yashwantha Singh, and Dr. Thaw Bram Chandis Singh, were also part of the team. Senior Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty supervised the entire process, assisted by OT nurses, floor nurses, and technicians.

This achievement reflects the tireless efforts of the state government and medical professionals in advancing organ transplantation services in Tripura. The first kidney transplant in the state was successfully performed on July 8, 2024, and the fifth transplant was completed on November 4, 2025, making these latest procedures the sixth and seventh in the state’s history.

Tripura now stands at the forefront of advanced kidney transplantation in the region, offering hope and life-saving opportunities to patients with renal ailments.
