Agartala, 21st April 2026: Tripura today came alive with celebrations as communities across the state observed the traditional Garia Puja, one of the most significant festivals of the indigenous tribes. The event, marked by devotion and cultural vibrancy, saw participation from people of all communities, transcending caste and creed.
Observed annually on the seventh day of the Bengali month of Baisakh, Garia Puja holds special importance for the tribal and Jamatia communities. Preparations for the festival had been underway for nearly a month, with villages and towns alike immersed in enthusiasm and anticipation.
Across the state, tribal families performed rituals to honor Baba Garia, maintaining age-old traditions. The customary practice of animal sacrifice, a part of the cultural heritage, was also carried out in several places. From wealthy households to modest ones, the puja was celebrated with equal fervor.
In Agartala and its adjoining areas, especially in tribal-dominated localities, the puja was organized both privately and publicly. On the occasion, Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Opposition Leader Jitendra Choudhury, Minister Ratanlal Nath, BJP state president and MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, along with several political leaders, extended greetings to the people. Their messages emphasized harmony and unity through the spirit of the festival.
Once considered primarily a tribal celebration, Garia Puja has now evolved into a festival embraced by all communities in Tripura. This year too, the festival became a symbol of togetherness, with people from diverse backgrounds joining in the revelry. The day transformed the state into a vibrant confluence of faith, culture, and joy.
