Agartala, 28th August 2026: A significant shortage of teaching staff continues to affect Tripura’s government colleges, with 325 posts lying vacant against the sanctioned strength, the state government informed the Legislative Assembly on Friday. The government, however, said recruitment is underway and 200 new Assistant Professor posts have also been approved to strengthen faculty strength.
Education (Higher) Minister Kishor Barman provided the information while replying to questions raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and CPI(M) MLA Asoke Chandra Mitra.
The state presently has 41 government colleges under the Higher Education Department, comprising 29 general degree colleges, five professional colleges, six polytechnics and one technical college. Together, these institutions have 69,677 students, while 797 regular teachers are currently in service.
Of the 325 vacant posts, 243 are in general degree colleges, 26 in professional colleges, 46 in technical colleges and 10 in polytechnics. Separately, the department stated that 683 subject-wise teaching posts have been sanctioned in government colleges, with 243 remaining vacant.
The government has initiated recruitment for 201 vacant Assistant Professor posts through the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC). The first phase of interviews has been completed, and a list of 74 candidates covering 14 subjects has been forwarded to the department. The second phase of interviews is currently in progress.
Selected candidates have already received offer letters following completion of administrative formalities. To tackle the immediate shortage, colleges have also been authorised to appoint 732 guest lecturers.
In a further move to expand the teaching workforce, approval has been granted for 200 additional Assistant Professor posts in government degree colleges. Recruitment for these posts, along with 42 existing vacancies, will be initiated after the required financial and administrative clearances.
For professional colleges, the department is undertaking amendments to the Recruitment Rules before proceeding with recruitment. Meanwhile, the government plans to fill remaining vacancies at the Tripura Institute of Technology after its proposed transformation into Tripura Government Technical University.
